This past weekend I had the great pleasure of attending the annual charity drag show at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. It’s hosted by the Rensselaer Pride Association, but the proceeds benefit a local charity.

This year the admission went to benefit the Damien Center in Albany. This wonderful community center is for individuals with HIV/AIDS and their families. Unfortunately, the center recently had a fire on their premise, and the donations are necessary now more than ever.

As expected at any drag show, there was the call for volunteers from the audience. Jon, still uncertain on his opinion towards the drag community, slouched in his seat and pretended to be invisible. So of course, Penny Larceny (the host) could sense his anxiety and with a towering voice pointed straight at him and said, YOU. He tried to pretend it wasn’t him, but Penny verified by saying “the guy next to the girl with the glasses”. For those readers who don’t know, I wear glasses! Possible unfortunate coincidence (possible blessing), a young man two rows behind us was also standing next to a girl with glasses. He was eager to go on stage–as eager as Jon was to stay in his seat. But Penny called them both up.

It starts off safe. What’s your name? Are you single? Take off your shirt.

But before we know it, there are two man in their underwear and two Queens heckling them.

But Jon and "Mark, I mean Mike, I mean Louis" as Penny referred to him)

But Jon and “Mark, I mean Mike, I mean Louis” (Penny just could not remember his name!) knew it was just good fun in the end.

After the show we got to meet some of the Queens!

Jenny Talia, the student drag queen happens to be a friend of Jons! She "doesnt have words" for his ability to shake his butt.

One of the performers was Eva Duarte-Peron Destruction. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing her for a few years now; first seeing her perform in a community theater performance of Little Shop of Horrors. Jon genuinely enjoyed her performances. Eva is great because, unlike most other queens, her legs are wonderfully long, lean, and toned without the help of pantyhose. She performed a great improv rendition of Tina Turner’s Rolling.

No hard feelings. Jon and Penny hug it out after the show.
